Memory definition - What it is, Meaning and Concept

First, before analyzing the meaning of the term memory that concerns us now, what we are going to do is determine the etymological origin of this word.In doing so we discover that it emanates from Latin, and more exactly from the word remember , which was composed of the prefix re -, which is equivalent to "again", and cordis , which is synonymous with heart.

A memory is the memory that is made of something that has already happened or what has already been said.The term is also used to name the notice or comment about the past .For example: "I always have my grandmother in my memory" , "I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I don't remember that situation" , "The people always keep their heroes in memory" .


The memory, therefore, is associated with a brain function (resulting from synaptic connections between neurons) and a psychic faculty (the ability to retain the past ).

Thanks to the ability to contemplate the past, the human being is in a position to plan the future .Memories may be linked to short-term memory or long-term memory .Animals, on the other hand, can only remember from their present needs.


When a person has trouble keeping memories, they are said to suffer from memory disturbances.The absence of memories, whether temporary, permanent, partial or total, is called amnesia .Other disorders are hypomnesia (decreased memory capacity), hypermnesia (increased memory capacity) and dysmnesia (quantitative alteration of memory).


In the same way, we cannot ignore another disease that is very associated with memories.It is Alzheimer's disease, a neurodegenerative pathology that causes people who suffer from it to lose their memory, because the nerve cells they are dying and, therefore, what would be the atrophy of certain parts of the brain.


Thus, those who have this disease can not remember things in their lives, they are not able to recognize their relatives, they find themselves with the fact that they do not know how to do day-to-day tasks that before they were sick if they did...


The concept of remembrance is also used to name the object that is given as a symbol of affection or the thing that is preserved to remember a person or an event : “I brought you a souvenir from Brazil” , “Before leaving, I want to stop by the souvenir shop to buy something for my aunt” , “That ring is a very important memory for me since it belonged to my father ”.

In addition to all this, it is interesting that we know that there is a monument in the world that is very related to the word that Now we are analyzing.It is the so-called Forest of Remembrance, which is located in the famous Retiro Park in Madrid.It was also known at the time as Forest of the Absent and it was decided to set it up in the wake of the March 11 attack of 2004 in which terrorist bombs put on trains ended the lives of 192 people.And that is a tribute to all these.
