Meaning of Method - What it is, Definition and Concept

A method is the set of techniques used to achieve an objective .It is the procedure, mode or systematic way to proceed for the development of an activity whose purpose is to obtain a specific goal or result The method can be assimilated in the usual way, based on experience, custom and wisdom, of performing a task in everyday life.

The method involves not only a set of procedures but also an approach.According to its Greek etymology, method means goal or path.


Science uses the scientific method as path to knowledge , which is a research method based on experience, that is, on the demonstrable empirical subject to the logic of reasoning.

The scientific method initiates the process in the systematic observation of natural phenomena through the senses, the formulation of a hypothesis, the logical deductive analysis, the practical verification or experimentation, the refutation or confirmation of the hypothesis, the establishment of a conclusion and the formulation of a law or general theory.


The deductive method is based on the deduction as a reasoning strategy, also called logical deductive.From general basic premises, it infers conclusions from the general to the particular.The deductive method is axiomatic when the premises are not demonstrable, and it is hypothetical, when the premises are verifiable.


The inductive method, also called inductive logic method , is a strategy of reasoning based on induction, which draws general conclusions from particular premises.


In math the concept of the method of substitution is used to solve algebraic equations.In algebra the substitution implies clearing an incognito, replacing the incognita in another equation, and to solve it replacing the resulting value in the first equation.
