What is AIMM (AGP Online Memory Module)?(What is, Concept and Definition)

Abbreviation for AGP online memory module , AIMM is also known as Graphics Performance Accelerator .It is an expansion card, Designed to be inserted into the AGP slot of a motherboard to allow additional dedicated memory for graphics processing.Motherboards that include on-board memory use a shared graphics memory design compared to the dedicated graphics memory found on a card removable AGP video. The graphics acceleration and processing capability on an integrated video card and shared memory is not as powerful.By using the AIMM expansion card, users can get some enhanced graphics acceleration and processing capabilities for less the cost of an AGP video card.

The AIMM expansion card provided 4 MB of dedicated graphics memory.Motherboards with the ability to use AIMM expansion cards became more available in the early 2000s.While it costs more, the AIMM expansion was not yet as popular an option as an AGP video card for dedicated graphics memory.

When PCI Express motherboards became available, computer users switched to PCI Express video cards, and the era of AGP graphics acceleration faded, including the AIMM expansion card.
