What is biocompatibility? »Its Definition and Meaning [2019]
The biocompatible materials , are characterized by having the property of not degrading or destroying the environment with which they coexist, that is, it does not destroy the biological character medium where they exert their action, for such reason, they are materials used and implemented in living beings such as humans, plants or animals, another name for the biocompatible elements is “biomaterials.”
Due to the exposed concept , it is of easy understanding then that these materials are used in most cases in the field of health or hospital, the materials used for contact with the tissue and internal mucous membranes of humans are biocompatible, examples of these elements are catheters, the probes, sterile syringes , among others.
These materials may have a brief or prolonged contact with the patient, if it is short the risk is run of studying with intoxication or hypersensitivity to the material used, however if the contact is going to be postponed or prolonged it must be taken into account, that does not have any type of reaction against the patient, that is, they are totally inert materials, and after the materials used are absorbed or suffer degradation, so that they are then supplanted by the normal tissue of the patient; An example of this is the resorbable sutures used for internal stitches.
Another feature that cannot be ignored, that these materials must possess, is that the complete union occurs and permanent with the tissue as is the case of orthopedic implants or also those dental implants.
