How to open Sound Recorder in Windows 98, ME and Vista

Sound Recorder in Windows 98 and higher is accessed by clicking Start , Programs , Accessories , Entertainment and click Sound Recorder .

You also have the option to manually run the file by clicking Start , Run , type sndrec32 and press Enter.

How to open Sound Recorder in Windows 95

Sound Recorder in Windows 95 is accessed by clicking Start , Programs , Accessories , Multimedia and by clicking Sound Recorder .

Sound Recorder Settings

The following contains information on how to install, uninstall and reinstall Sound Recorder.

1. Click Start , Settings , Control Panel and double-click Add/Remove Programs icon.


2. Click the Windows Settings tab.


3. Highlight Multimedia , click the details button.


4. Once inside Multimedia :

• Check the box for Sound Recorder , click OK, and then Apply to install.


• Uncheck the box, click Ok and then Apply to uninstall.


• Uncheck the box, click OK and then Apply ; go back and check the box again, click OK and then Apply to reinstall.

Troubleshooting Sound Recorder

How can I record a sound file of more than 60 seconds?

Unfortunately, there is no known way to change the sound recorder to record more than 60 seconds.

The alternative to this solution would be to obtain an application designed to record sound files with a good compression ratio, such as Audacity.

The receive error sound device is not installed

When you try to play a sound.wav file, you receive the following error message: "Sound Recorder cannot record or play because a sound device is not installed."

Click Start and then Run and type system.ini, this should take you to the system notebook.In the [start] section add the following line.

drivers=MMSYSTEM.DLL

If this line is present, but starts with a semicolon (; ), remove the semicolon to uncomment this line.

If the line " drivers=" exists, but with a different file name, you can add MMSYSTEM.DLL to the end of the line, separated by a space.

The microphone does not record any sound

If, when you try to record, you don't see the status indicator line moving when you speak into the microphone, please follow these steps.

• Verify that the microphone is hooked in the correct place (line out or microphone) on your sound card.


• If the microphone uses batteries, make sure they are good batteries.


• Check the correctly established settings by clicking Start , Settings , Control Panel and go to Multimedia ; make sure the correct recording and playback device is correct.
