Definition of infrasound - What it is, Meaning and Concept

Infrasound is a notion that is used in the field of physics .It is called the sound wave which, due to its low vibrational frequency , is not detected by the human ear .

Recall that a wave is a periodic movement whose propagation can be carried out in a vacuum or in a physical environment.In the case of sound waves , they are produced by the vibration of a physical element and transmit a sound .


The vibration of adjoining molecules generates a chain movement that, when propagated, causes pressure differences that the human ear perceives as a sound .A person's ear can record sound waves from frequencies between 20 Hz and approximately 20,000 Hz .

This means that sound waves with a frequency below 20 Hz are not detected by humans: these are infrasound we don't hear.Many animals , like the whales , the tigers and elephants , if they pick up waves of this type.


It should be noted that Hz is the symbol of hertz , the unit that allows to reflect the amount of vibrations for a unit of time: that is, the frequency .When the frequency is low (and, therefore, the sound wave has few vibrations per temporal unit), it is an infrasound that the human cannot hear.


If the sound wave has a very high frequency , greater than 20,000 Hz , it is called ultrasound .As with the infrasound, the human being cannot perceive them either, unlike the bats , the dolphins and other species.
